There’s been a lot of conversation about Artificial Intelligence, or AI, and what it means for Mansfield. Some of that conversation has created confusion and concern, so I want to take a moment to explain what it actually means for our community.
AI doesn’t replace people. It replaces paperwork. When I talk about AI in local government, I’m not talking about robots or job cuts. I’m talking about tools that help our employees do their jobs more efficiently and effectively.
AI is like a digital assistant that never sleeps. It takes care of repetitive, time-consuming work so township staff can focus on what matters most: serving residents. It doesn’t replace people. It replaces inefficiency.
Our employees are the backbone of Mansfield. AI simply gives them better tools to do their work faster, safer, and with more accuracy.
Some have claimed that using technology could cost tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars. That isn’t true. Modern software tools are affordable and already built into systems the township uses today. Responsible innovation isn’t about spending more money. It’s about working smarter with what we already have.
Here are a few examples of how AI can help Mansfield right now:
Road Maintenance: Automatically flag potholes or road wear so Public Works can prioritize repairs sooner.
Permits and Inspections: Route applications and inspection requests instantly to the right department instead of waiting days or weeks for updates.
Resident Communication: Use a website assistant to answer questions like “When is bulk pickup?” or “How do I apply for a permit?” so residents get answers quickly while staff focus on more complex issues.
Public Safety: Track volunteer coverage and response times to strengthen Fire and EMS planning without adding cost or cutting personnel.
Finance and Accountability: Flag irregular spending or track project costs in real time to keep the budget transparent and protect taxpayer dollars.
These are not futuristic ideas. They are practical, responsible uses of technology that help towns save time and money.
Leadership starts with accountability. Residents deserve open dialogue, honest answers, and a clear understanding of how their government works. If I propose a new idea, you will always know what it is, what it costs, and why it matters.
I believe in open conversation, not closed comment sections. I’ll always listen to feedback, even when it’s tough to hear.
AI isn’t something to fear. It’s something to understand. It’s not about replacing people. It’s about empowering them. It’s not about spending more. It’s about managing smarter. It’s not about taking control away. It’s about making government more transparent, efficient, and accountable.
When used responsibly, AI can help keep taxes low, improve services, and make communication clearer. That’s not risky. That’s responsible.
I’m Mike Bollard, and I believe technology should always serve people first, helping Mansfield run smarter while staying true to its community values.
Let’s make Mansfield stronger together through innovation, integrity, and transparency.
